Default Dumb Q -What's the resonator for?

Can anybody tell me what isthatresonartor(black box in the fender) for? Its conected to the AIT sensor and I understand you remove it to make room for the CAI in the fender.
I have a K&N short ram, so would there be any benefits by removing the resonator?
Thanks
