Default Temp gauge reads cool

I just bought a 2000 Neon auto with about 140k as a commuter car. The car runs great, but the coolant temp gauge seems to read very cool. It seems to sit at or below the 1/4 most of the time. Any ideas? I added coolant but the reservoir is so clouded that I cant see the level. Any ideas?

Did you know of any good places to get exhaust parts? (Headers, high flow cat, and catback)
