Default Should I Buy a High Mileage 2000?

I have been looking around for a cheap four banger to drive back and forth to school because using my V8 powered s10 as a daily driver is becoming very costly. I came across a2000 with just under 180,000 miles. I need something thats fairly reliable. I drive around 35 miles each day to school. The car runs and drives ok but I dont know how long it will last because I have no experience with these cars. The dealer doesnt have any service records becuase it was just a trade in. Its an automatic if that makes any difference. So what do you guys think? I can get the car for less than a grand.

honestly id say no. look for something else,a neon with 180,000 miles on it will probly be as unreliable as the ur project car when it comes to d.d. theres always small ish breaking down on it and if ur not on top of maintence with the thing it will come back to bite u in the ***. in short, u really cant treat a neon like a beater, cuz it doesnt take abuse to lightly lol...atleast IMO.

****, whenever I buy a used car, I never get one that has over 80k on it. When I bought my 02 SXT a year and a half ago, it only had 48k on it.

Yeah... 180k is pushing it. I'd bet on needing a full tranny rebuild within a year or so. Driving 35 miles a day will add up if you're going to be going to school for more than a couple years. Not really worth it IMHO.

godamn that's a lot of miles. with the way neon transmissions are, i'd say no.

it might cost a grand..but cost a lot more once you're done repairing it. that's a LOT of miles. i'm just at 87k (well almost)

i bought a neon with 103k 2 years ago for $500. i drove itmostly in the winter and it was great as a daily driver. i didnt put any money into it except for a tranny filter and flush, new wires, plugs, rear brakes, wipers andair cleaner.

i sold this car last week, to my friends son, with 115k for $100. it needed, rotors, calipers, drums, wheel cyls, ATX cable, A/C is broke, radio broke, paint is FUBAR, horn is broke. not bad for $100, i think he got a great car with potential, that he can drive for a few years.

sooooo, you want to buy a neon with 180k for $1000???? look around at private party sales and you can grab one with less miles for $1000 and put a few dollars into it doing maintenence, like timing belt and so forth. you will have a great car for cheap.
