Default Cams

Ok, here's the deal!

I want a new cam for more power. I plan on keeping it a daily driver and I also plan on boosting in the future.

Which is better?
Comp 200 or Crane 12 or something else?

where can I get 1, how much?

and besides the cam, will I need anything else to swap the cams?

the comp 200 and the crane #0012 are essentially the same camshaft. They are both good for turbo's as both have a decent turbo grind.

Now, you can pick up the crane cam and the comp 200 anyplace. You can order them off the dealer sites (if i remember right). They will probably run you ~250 bucks before shipping.

You will need to replace the stock valve springs. Those... those little pieces of crap, were the soul reason it took me 7 extra hours to do MY camshaft install. The hard part wasnt taking the stock ones off... it was getting the valve stem locks to go on! There is just (seemingly) not enough room in the head to get a spring compressor to fit and still be able to put on the stem locks.

You dont need to replace the retainers, so if you feel more comfortable doing it anyways... youd be tacking on a large amount of money to the install.

I opted to take my head off to work on it... you DEFINATELY don't have to go that far... but I found it really helped (i wasnt bent over in my engine bay for 7 hours... I was standing COMFORTABLY).

You might want to go out and buy some new gaskets for everything (like the valve cover and the cam position sensor).

I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing an Adjustable cam gear from AEM or Fidanza. It will help you dial in that new monster at the dyno (if you ever take it ofcourse).

Aside from that...

Cam lube
Pulley Puller
some wrench time
A Haynes manual
And some luck

Good luck and more power to ya!!

(catch the pun?)

i dunno if this appleis to neon motors but some times when u pull off the head it was either the block or the head it self that gets warped in the process. Meaning it will need to get redecked b4 installing in order to maintain a proper seal.

Just make sure the headbolts are removed in the proper sequence and are retorqued to the proper specification and sequence and you'll be fine. What your talking about is an aluminum cylinder head warping from improper removal or installation, I've never heard anyone having a problem with a Neon though.
