background...heres an 02 dodge neon 105000 miles...drive her 75 percent freeway 25 precent city....70 miles a day...always used mobil 1...the tranny has had a small leak for a awhile...sometimes shifts a little hard...

well this morning...start her up...and i always let her warm up for atleast 5 minutes...

went from park to reverse...backed up maybe...15 feet....put it in drive...was in neutral...revved up...(2500rms)...nothin....revved again...nothin....THEN it slams into drive...


how long do yall think i can ride on this tranny...havent checked the fluid yet...but judging from the sympttoms...i imagine its a little low...

i can drive my toy although it will kill my wallet while the neon is getting repaired...so here goes...how long yall think i have left on the tranny before taking it in...

you need to change the tranny fluid and filter and make appropriate adjustments this week, or else.

 

i checked the tranny fluid...and shes full...

is there any tutorials on how to change it??

 

Yep, most ATX need fluid changed out at about 75K miles if you want them to keep working right. We did our '99 Dodge Caravan at 77K and at just over 105K it's still working great. Lots of people told me the trans would go out at 100K but then I think they're the ones that didn't change fluid either. LOL. Preventive Maintaince is the key to keeping a car running for a long time.

 

well she has 105000 on her...and most of those are freeway miles...ya think if i change the fluid itll last a few more months?? looks like theres a **** load more precipation in the forecast...so how much would i expect to shell out to get this done??

I have 135,000 on my atx andI don't think it has ever been changed. Its something on the list for the summer, the lack of heated garage makes it hard.

sounds like a god time to start thinking about a 5 speed swap.

 

this is something you should do yourself to make sure its done right. quick change places do not know crap about neon tranny's and will put the wrong fluid in and you will have headaches. take it to the dealer if you must. they will charge you about $100, but you can do it yourself with 5 quarts of MOPAR ATF ONLY and filter for $35-45.. do not use any old ATF, you have to use MOPAR or equivilant and theres only 2 companies that make it. i think its called ATF+4 and it says on the back for chryslers. (dodges too)

 

instead of getting a new tranny, or any repairs on it..... get a new car

 

well im glad someone posted about the tranny fluid...cause i had no idea...and yeah me and my pop will be doing it tommorrow...and if the neon still downshifts hard...i its gonna go in at tax time...its very hard to justify buying a new car when i dont have that kind of money...and when this is the first REAL problem the car has had....105k on her...mostly freeway miles...always let her warm up before leaving the house...always used mobil 1...etc...950 is 950...but spending upwards of 2k if not more on a car that ya know NOTHING about is not a smart thing to do in my book...i bought my truck used...with 10k on her...limited edition...and previous owner beat the living **** out of it...

ill just run this car into the ground...thats what ya do when ya buy a NEW car right???

so far is costed me 2000 a year..not bad!! =o)
