just so you all know.. mobile 1 its not a true synthetic oil!
where do you get your info?

yes, you can switch back and forth for sythetic to convetional.

"What makes synthetic oil superior to conventional oil?

Historically, conventional oils lack the performance of synthetic oils in the areas of low-temperature performance and high-temperature oxidation stability. Conventional motor oil is made up of an inconsistent mixture of long and short chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms. In the extreme heat of an engine, short-chain molecules can evaporate, and unstable molecules can oxidize and break down. Conventional oils also contain much greater amounts of impurities, such as sulfur, reactive and unstable hydrocarbons, and other undesirable contaminants that cannot be completely removed by conventional refining of crude oil. Mobil 1 uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance viscosity grade use a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application."

i just don't feel comfortable going back and forth, i don't like to downgrade.
i found this stuff that requires no oil changes http://www.synlube.com/
Even if the oil would be good for the life of the engine it's all the other stuff that gets into the oil that does the harm. Fuel gets by the rings and causes acids to forum in the oil, metal shaving flake off of the cylinder walls and other parts of the engine. All that stuff will mess up your engine even if the oil is still fine. I've always been a dyno oil guy that changed every 3K miles. It's a BIG change for me to go synthetic and change every 7K. That's about as far as I care to take it.

Does anybody know how long Royal Purple is good for between changes?

Where did you learn that about Mobil 1 not being a true synthetic!!! I know a few cars that require it form the factory as the ony oil they allow you to use (chevy corvette and BMW just to name a few) Just curious to read what your reading because I've read up on royal purple and I may switch to them if what your saying is true.

on the amsoil website theres info about mobil1 not being a true synthetic and how the synthetic oil companies have conspired to fool the public.

i think i will just use the dyno oil. its worked for over 100 years in all applications.

ohh and you guys act like you are going to keep your rides till you are 80. let it blow up and get a new car or an ebay motor for $350

I would really believe it if it was on one of the rivals(lack of a better word) websites. Like I said, I haven't had a problem with mobil yet, so Im gonna keep using it.

OK OK lets end this stuff once and for all (until the next thread anyway)....

For our cars (No the SRT4) conventional will serve you beautifully and is a cost effective way to maintain your car. True Synthetics are better in supper high stress or long drain intervals but under about 5K on current crop of oil their is no problems. If you live in the northern parts of Canada and experience -40 degrees (pick your scale at that temp they are the same) a good synthetic will surely help bring the beast to life. If you just can't seem to stop in for an oil change but every 8-10K then you NEED synthetic as well.

Now as far as the Mobil1 thing there is a guy verified and vouched for by many other who actually know him that he was who he said he was found the new Mobil1 Extended performance was in fact a GroupIII oil not the PAO (GroupIV) they touted so hard up until then... However, remember mose Castrol, Pennzoil, Q, and other synthetics are in fact GroupIII oils sometimes referred to as HIGHLY processed conventional oil. One advantage of this type of synthetic is the lack of a carrier oil for the add pack like Royal Purple has admitted to some using (They were using GroupI, which can't meet SM,GF-4) so go figure. As far as the standard Mobil1, it seems to be the same old stuff so use that but don't spend any money on the new stuff.

As far as switching back and forth let all the nay sayers go in one ear and out the other. I have switched back and forth on every car I have owned and never once had an oil leak. A synthetic oil is like have ing all molecules being
oooooooooooooooooooooooooo size
not
.oOooo...OOoooo averaging out to whatever grade you need. Just think of it as more accurate oil less inclined to break down.

In the end yes your engine will stay cleaner and wear a bit less with synthetic oil but even with properly maintained conventional oil then engine will probably outlast the rest of the car.

Now if you have a Turbo or go 10K on an oil change then definitely get synthetic.

Amzoil was the first fully synthetic oil, and the first with a 0w30 weight oil. This oil has virtually no viscosity change across it effective temperature range.Ihave used Amzoil for years, andchange it at 20000 miles, andfilter every 10K.For the most part it looks the same going in as it does coming out. With Amzoil, you can run up to 25Kmiles betweenchanges. If you do the math, it comes out cheaper to run synthetic, which is why I started using them in the first place. Synthetics usually contain more detergents then conventional oils, and can strip an engineof sludge leftover from conventional oils, this sludge can block small passageways used to feed the engine internals.I have heard of people using synthetic oils in engines with more then 75K miles and running into problems.Syntheticbased oils and caster based oils are not compatable, and will destroy your engine if mixed. They immediately chemically react and form a gel which hardens inside the engine. There are two stroke oils which are caster based, but not many four stroke oils. Synthetics lubricate much better then conventional oils, stick to components better, have better high pressure film strength and reject contaminants better.

ewetho i remeber the research part a while back. The whole going over 3k on synthetic, i was always raised to do it every 3k and i do with the castrol syn blend. The mobil 1 thing, i'll trust them in my new car.

Yeah. So I used to have the oil changed for me. It would always be conventional. but I needed an oil change bad and there was a sale on synthetic oil, so I got it and put it in. now, I've heard from some that I cant go back to conventional oil, then i hear from others that it's a bunch of BS and you can go back to conventional oil after you use a synthetic. so, what's the deal? can I got back to conventional? if not, why? and what will it do to the engine.
I had the same question so i ask my dad! His the one i go to for all my car questions, if hedoesn't know the answer then come here. But we had this come up just last night, syntheetic is mostly used in high powered engins sauch as , a mustang gt, gt500, viper. well you get my point. Now if you had a SRT -4 and had it supt up then i understand.

Conventional is for mostly not all modifed cars. And he's right you can't go backto useing conventional oil after you use synthetic. Which sucks but it's the truth. with conventional oil you cann make the same gains, I useto use 10w-30, because i was in high climates (cold weather) it's better! Buts since i moved back home is alot warmer and i'm using 5w-30.
