Well noob, you might as well cut the wires and just yank it out now then since it's just dead weight you're carrying around and not doing anything. lol
IT MOST CERTAINLY has a LOT to do with gas mileage... and yes, the upstream sensor is the one between the cat and head. I changed mine myself... it only takes a few minutes usually. If a chop has to change it for you, labor should be less than half an hour charge. I paid $25 for a Bosch sensor for mine. I'm not saying that everyone needs to run out and change theirs, in my case I really needed a new one due to a fouled old one.

IowaNeon04 - I just called a local car repair shop (because no, i can't do it myself) and the guy on the phone laughed at me and told me my 02 sensor wouldn't have anything to do with my gas mileage. But, I think once I can figure out how the hell to get the casing of my air filter off and have that replaced I will give it a try. About how much was it to have it replaced? And I'm assuming that upstream is different than downstream and I would love to know the difference...
(please excuse my car ignorance...)

Information on oxygen concentration is sent to the engine management computer or ECU, which adjusts the mixture to give the engine the best possible fuel economy and lowest possible exhaust emissions.lol ok im done peace

I had the exact same problem when i put in some injector cleaner into my car awhile back... i got reallllllly bad MPG.... anyways it fixed itself 2 tanks of gas after i put the injector cleaner in there... also unless it is an r/t use 87 octane fuel or your gas milage will suffer a great deal as well....

RE: Help! Terrible MPG - - any ideas?
-My '05 SXT get only about 23-25 MPG around town. But we went to Myrtle Beach again two weeks ago and got between 32-35 MPG on the Interstate. This was driving roughly 70 MPH and about half the time with the a/c on. Not too shabby there at all, but I still wish I could get the in town mileage up a bit more. I filled up right before we left home and didn't have to fill up again until we crossed the Virginia state line after the Welcome Center. From there I filled up again about 45 minutes outside Myrtle Beach. That's pretty good for a 12.5 gallon tank.
