2000 grit should be used for finishing/polishing only.
For a good base for fresh paint to stick to, I would use a 400-grit. Especially since you are going close to the bumper, where more potential for flexing will be expected.
I usually use sandpaper and steel wool as a last-step "even-ing" method before I spray the new on, just my preferrence.

steel wool? - I norm use a 3m scuff pad - the yellow ones - really good for clear coat prep
one trick is use - 600 paper, attach a scuff pad to the back - if you are using Hook it - makes a nice hand prepper....vs trying to grip the paper...

well thanks for the advice.
i took my own adive too.
lol.
i redid it monday it came out looking like crap no i just sanded it down again used some can primer and its all primered now just going to mix me some paint in a few and paint it with maybe like 2 coats of paint and 2 of clear throuh out the day given it 1 hour drying time inbetween coats.
ill let yall know how it came out later tonite with pics.

^^ if he spot primed it, and is going to sand it just to make sure that it is smooth then the rattle can will be fine, as long as he sanded it out! i use rattle can primer alot to make sure that the surface is smooth, my trunk lid and front bumper fix i have used rattle cans befroe and has been fine... just make sure to sand it down first
