Tranny question
Have an '02 Neon SXT with 63,000 miles. When on the freeway at about 65 I can feel the trans shift in and out of overdrive - tach flucuates also. Also sometimes when I come to a stop the car 'shudders' like it is having trouble downshifting. Does not do either problem all the time. I was thinking about changing the fluid and filter and I see that a transmission shift solenoid is available for the 4 speed. Any other suggestions???
change the tranny filter and use ATF+4 only to fill. any brand, just make sure its ATF+4. you will need 4.5 quarts if you just drain it and change the filter. if you take it to a shop and have it flushed, then it will take around 8 quarts, just make sure they use ATF+4 and dont let them tell you that it doesnt matter, cause it DOES!!!!
just spend half a day and do it yourself. Pick up 5 quarts of mopar ATF+4, high temp silicone and the filter kit. You might also want a scraper
1) Get it in the air, i used jackstands.
2) Take out the tranny pan bolts. Then pry off the pan on one side. For this i left some bolts in on one side. Let it drain. Also clean off any sludge.
3) Change the filter and mine came with a rubber L shape in the filter kit. Replaced the filter.
4) Now with clean off the old gasket/silicone on the pan and tranny.
5) Ok what me and my dad did was put the silicone on the pan. Then we placed the gasket and tightened up all the bolts.
6) Fill up the tranny with 3 1/2-4 qts. Shift through the gears a couple of time. Check for leaks too.
7) If everything checks out, finish filling it up. Just don't overfill it.
You saved yourself some money and properly flushed your tranny. Most shops just suck it out.

FYI, I would stick only with the Mopar ATF+4 if I were you... don't get me wrong, I am a fan of certain RP products, Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline, etc etc... but for our particular transmissions, you should really consider using the recommended Mopar stuff, and NO OTHER, with NO extra additives mixed into it. My $0.02 on this matter, again...
