2001 2.0 SOHC vs 1997
Can someone tell me the difference between a 2001 SOHC 2.0 engine and a 1997 SOHC 2.0 ?
I have a 2001 neon with a broken timing belt and probably bent valves, etc. & have found a good engine for next to nothing from a 1997 neon. Can I install that complete engine from the 1997 in my 2001 neon ? I am thinking that the cost & labor will be less for me to do the engine swap vs. repairing the head & replacing the timing belt, etc. with the engine in the car. (I will be doing all of the work myself)
Any opinions on that ?
Thanks very much in advance !

But can I not swap any parts such as the "CPU" to make the engines compatible ? So, my question is, is the basic head, engine block, etc. identical on the 1st gen vs. 2nd gen, or are their differences that would make them incompatible ?
Thanks !
Thanks !
That I don't know because I just bought the car "on the cheap" b/c the lady who had it didn't want to repair it....she said she heard no noise in particular, just the engine stopped running.....I'm not even 100% sure that the timing belt has actually broken.
What is the easiest way to check for a broken timing belt ? I did hook up my compression guage & found compression in only 1 of the cylinders...so I suspect that some/many of the valves are stuck open/bent possibly and that the cam is not rotating.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi,
The neon has 127K miles on it....no I am not sure if any valves are bent, but I am told that there is nearly a 99% certainty, that on an interference engine, when the timing belt breaks, that at least 1 or more valves are bent.....does this not apply to the neon 2.0 engine ?
Thanks
Brian
