IVE GOT A 97 DOHC. THE OWNER BEFORE ME HAD THE PROBLEM WITH THE NOTORIOUS HEAD GASKET. THEY FIXED IT BUT HE COULDNT REMEMBER IF THE TIMG BELT WAS DONE WHEN THEY DID THIS. AS FAR AS I KNOW TO DO A HEAD GASKET YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE BELT OFF ANYWAY. SO AM I SAFE IN ASSUMING THAT THE MECHANIC WOULD TRY TO UPSELL THE TIMING

 

You do have to take it off to do the gasket. I wouldn't bet that they did the belt, but they could have.

 

I would check you receipt if ya still have it. It would be a nice upsell at the time but did ya want to pay is the question. If you don't remember him asking and paying for the exta stuff then you probably did not get one. Beside now ya got to pay again. Hopefully done but once again check your receipt or call the mechanic if it was entered in computer history.
