Default Oil Weight

Hi just curious. I have an 05 SXT and it has 24,000. I am in the process of switching form Mobil 1 to Amsoil. I see that a couple of you are using 5w30 in your cars. My oil cap and manual recomend 5w20. Is there any backing to this. I understand especially during the hot summer months, you need the heavier oil but does that go for a full synthetic? Just thought I would put it out there. Thanks

They may have switched. Manufacturers do that every now and then, even on the same cars. Usually for gas mileage reasons.

As N30N has pointed out, whether it is 5W20 or 5W30, the weight is the same no matter if it is regular oil or synthetic oil. The properties of the oil are what make the differences.

Yeah, my 03 is 5W-30. Don't see why they'd switch, but didn't want to say it if I didn't know.

-I run Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 in my '05 SXT. She has a bit over 36k on her now. I ran 5w30 for a few oil changes when I first bought it, but I switched back to 5w20 because of the low mileage on it. I bought it with 19k on it last year. You should be totally fine running 5w20.
