Default Rack and Pinion

Hi, i recently acquired a 2000 neon from my cousin for $300.... its got 104K, only problem is it was in a minor accident, and because of that the the rack and pinion is bad.... how involved of a process is this?? if i took it to a mechanic, how much might i expect to pay?? I would say im mechanicly inclined, ive done head gaskets, etc.... but i have no clue as to how much work this involves.... im not to big of a fan when it comes to fixing steering parts..... but if its too much at a shop i might have to..... i appriciate any help on this!!

Installing a power rack and pinion is not impossible but can be very time consuming if you are a "back yard mechanic" The biggest issue is getting the car high enough so it can be accessed from underneath. You will have to pull both wheels, power steering lines, pinion joints and a few other small parts. Then on the new install you will have to bleed the power steering. I am not sure but at a garage I would think this would be a 2 hour job.
