Default '00 Transmission issue

Well my GFs neon all of a sudden won't engage into any gears. It is an automatic, and the shifter will move just as it always has. When trying to engage it into Drive or Reverse, it does feel as though it is about to catch, but it actually doesn't. She said while she was driving it, before it went out, she couldn't get above 20 MPH. It then wouldn't move forward while in gear.

I've heard something about it possibly being a cable? Any thoughts? Pictures would be great too, if possible.

Thanks in advance

sound like your gears might be stripped.its going to cost 300 adverage to have the trani dropped.thats my opinion

make sure to check your trani fluid.it might need to be changed so check and make sure it doesn't smell burnt or a dark brown.

i dont know much at all about auto trannys, but i do agree with N3ON.. check the fluid... from what i know of, if you run low in fluid in the autos it will do that, im not sure how you check the fluid in them cause ive never had an auto tranny... but check that first... then go from there... if everything checks out, you may have to have it rebuilt... which i would say, shop around, and see which would be cheaper, either rebuilt tranny or finding one in a junkyard with low miles.. good luck with this man.

NO, a 05 tranny will not work in a 00. Well it will but only if you swap out everything from your tranny to your pcu/harness/sensors/shift lankage/etc etc

If I remember correctly the 03+ trannies run on solenoids to shift the gears, and not hydraulics like the -02's. Totally different transmission, and ALOT of work to swap out.

Default similar problem

My wife has an 05 neon that occasionally seems to disengage the transmission at random, like it's out of gear, usually in the first 5 min of driving. It's like the car is in neutral. It usually does it for about 5-15 sec, then drives fine until it is shut down and has time to cool off again.

No trouble codes either.

Any ideas?
