Smile 2000 Neon key problem

I have a 2000 Neon and when I put the key into the ignition cylindar, the key won't turn to start the car. Its been going for awhile because I would just put the key in faster and it would turn over. Lately, its been getting worse and finally this morning nada.
Someone told me its a problem in all Chrysler products but this is the first time I've seen this kind of problem.
Do I have to take apart steering column to fix and what is involved? The key is married to the electronics. My son is a good backyard mechanic and he wanted to know what is involved to fix this. If too much for us, how much for a reg. mechanic repair?

Thanks a lot, I need help

well i think i've seen the gray ones before.see mine is huge and black and has a chip in it.i dont think yours does.it would have to be in your steering colum.if i was you i would buy a manual cause i doubt anyones had that kind of problem.i mean starter, battery, altinator is all the same but not your prob.

My key on my 2001 was, and on my 2003 is, gray. The top of it is about the size of a quarter or so?
