future mods, need opinions and suggestions
I remember seeing people on the org shooting for 200whp with sohc neons and only a handful ever made it. I remember it costing them a fortune to do it as well so a lot just switched their build to turbo. But if you are just going for n/a you are for sure going to need cam, long tube header, exhaust, intake, ported head, probably port/polish your intake mani, tb. Basically you're going to need every bolt on possible and even then you probably still won't come that close to 200whp or 13s in quarter mile. I'd guess you might get in the 14s with all that. Don't most stock R/Ts run high 15s stock? I got my regular neon close to low 16 stock. I'm sure with the gearing on the R/T and the extra hp I could get a R/T in the 15s stock.
200whp in a sohc neon is serous business, even with a magnum head. Dohc neons were able to use very large cams and high ompression to achieve this. You will have to work harder. As said before, you will need every bolt on available, head work, a larger cam, and tuning (SAFC2/NEO, MS). Not sure if the intake manifold is a "bottleneck" or not for such a build. Friend of mine had the butterflies removed from his, and the manifold extrude honed and welded together. Some work is required to run a 60mm tb on your neon. Either a tube manifold, or extrude hone. Extrude hone is about $400 plus. I got a manifold for my 2.4L for $140 shipped[/bragging]. To get into the low 14's. you are going to have to get dirty. Your car is pretty stout from the factory, but the 2G cars are heavier. Low on cash, I'd sell some of the stock parts off later to offset the cost. Ebay is your ally. Get your udp and lth from there.
just bought a 60mm tb, and aem intake arm, also front and rear strut sway bars. pretty good deal 160 bux for all. let you know how it runs and handles when i get a chance to install it all
