Default SXT '03 tires

Hi, im an owner of a 03 Neon SXT now browsing the market for all season tires. The factory stock wheel diameter is 14", however the manufacturer suggestion is either installing
P175/70R14 84T or : P185/60R15 84T While shopping around for tires, a mechanic suggested sticking with the P175/R14 since (according to him) going a size larger with P185/R15 could create problems, including transmission problems. [Strangely enough manufacturer lists 175 and 185 as equals, while most internet sites and tire center systems list 185 as OPTIONAL). Most car centers really don't have P175 readily available, and internet selection is far more appealing for P185s, and I really want to go with the later (even it will cost more$).
Any thoughts of what tire size i should go with and what is the likelihood of running into problems if getting tires one size larger (assuming i'm getting all 4 tires changed).
Thanks

well the 185 if for the 15" wheel. if you can find 185 65 r14 that would be a good way to go, so you can keep your original wheels.

here is a list from tire rack

-I have the 15s on mine and I have Cooper CS4s on it. Excellent all weather tire. Kind of a sport touring radial. And one of the best I've had for serious wet weather traction.
