Default Malfunction indicator light

Have a 2000 Neon and my mil light has come on. I was stopped at a stop sign when I felt the car jerk. It did this a couple of times then stopped. I was then starting to pick up speed when the engine became sluggish and seemed to work better when I let off the gas. About 50km later the MIL light came on and started to flash when the engine would become sluggish and would remain on when it was not sluggish. Any ideas what might be causing this? Thought maybe something to do with the catalytic converter? Any help would be great.

Could be a bad plug, wire, coil pack, or injector. Most likely, in that order from likeliness to happen to not. I'd start checking with the plug and work your down the list.
