Unhappy Please HELP... P0601 PCM code questions

First its a 2001 plymouth neon very basic /power locks /no power windows/ automatic / and basic 4 cyl.

Also I have a gray key from what I understand that has a security thing attached to it????????????????

OK so yesterday while going to school I smelled something like a electric fire and couldnt find the culprit.

So today I was driving along all lalalalala then BAM check engine light came on.

Checked it and find out its a P0601 code now from what I read the PCM is more than likely screwed.

I call dodge they want 550 dollars for a new one + install and flash.

I am wondering if I go to a salvage yard and get one out of a similar year make model can I just install it without having to do anything else? IE= plug and play

Will a dodge PCM work on mine? Also what year PCM's will work for mine/ hopefully other years DODGE pcm's will work.

No, the computer must be flashed to the car. They have to put the VIN in it.

what if I used the Gray key/security ring in colum/the ignition/ECM/ security brain in the dash ? would it then work without the flash if it was from a same year with the same options?

I'm not sure I'm following (it might be that I am buzzed ATM too). The gray "sentry" keys, or whatever Dodge calls them, are programmed to each vehicles specific VIN. So, if you put a new computer in, the VIN has to be programmed to it otherwise neither will recognize the other and the car will shut off.

There are several parts to the security key system. The Skim module in the steering column reads the key code if it matches it sends a signal to the PCM. This signal contains the VIN number and must match the VIN stored in the PCM in order to enable the system.

You would have to swap the SKIM module, the PCM, the ignition lock and the keys from a donor car.

Now the VIN would not match the actual car but it should work, Dodge might question this if you ever have to have it reflashed.

Hmmm, perhaps I was thinking of a cluster swap then with the programming of the VIN. Good info.

I appoligize i know nothing about cars so hopefully i make everything clear!
I have a 99 plymouth neon and i know my fuel pump is going but before we figured the fuel pump is going or filter is clogged, the check engine light came on and came up as P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error. NO one knew what that meant. autozone, advanced autobody.. Im wondering though if my exhaust had anything to do with it because we wired up the exhaust after i hit a bump and it came off. But i did unplug the battery which turned off the check engine light but it eventually came back on. My question is could the exhaust have anything to do with it and how do i check to see if i do need a new PCM?
