Default Loose shifting

I own an 02 Neon SXT(manual) with 52k miles. In the past, the shifting has been loose and it seems to be coming back. The problem is when trying to shift into a gear, the stick has a lot of play(the stick is loose in gear as well). Also at times, when I shift the car into reverse(with the clutch fully engaged) it grinds.

Is the linkage loose? Is it the bushings? What could be causing this?

Last time this happened, I took the car to the dealership and they fixed the problem for a hefty price.
I want to know if it's something I could fix in my garage for cheap.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

The bushings are replaced fairly regularly on manuals. Most use the Booger(sp) bushings.
