Default Dodge Neon Basic Maintenance Parts- Part Number List

Prices first came from PepBoys, then NAPA, then Kragen/O'Reilly. K&N prices came from their direct order site. I understand that certain places may have these parts for cheaper than listed (Wal-Mart and Summit Racing come to mind). These are all direct replacement parts; i.e., no larger oil filters (Viper style) and so on.

-Personally I don't like Champion plugs. I've used both NGK V-Power and G-Power plugs and like them quite a bit. The V's are basically a stock replacement plug, while the G's are a platinum tipped plug. You can get a new set of either for about $10-$14.

I use the copper Champion plugs. Copper is the best, and cheapest, IMO if your engine isn't modded.

On a non-modded engine, there is no improvement. Heck, some engine tuners prefer copper plugs because they can handle more spark better than these "fine-wire" plugs.

Here's from a local engine shop (a sponsor on another forum) that regularly builds 500HP-1,000HP+ engines that outlast and outperform most everyone else's around:
Copper: Best heat disipation, shortest life, cheap
Platinum: Poor heat disipation (burns hotter), 100K life, more expensive
Irridium: VERY poor heat disipation (burns the hottest), 100K+ life, Extremely expensive

On boosted setups it is a very bad idea to run platinum and irridium core plugs due to the lack of heat disipation. The spark plug can actually become a Glow Plug and cause detonation, reguardless of octane used.
This is a real issue in 2V heads as the poor head design already has a hard time disipating the heat at the spark plug.

FYI, the hotter the spark, the more complete the burn of the A/F. This is why the drivability is better with an irridium vs copper.

My wife's 2001 VW Passat requires Premium fuel (I think the owners manual calls for 93 or 94 octane actually). Stock the thing came with Platium plugs. The motor has knock sensors. Every Passat we test drove had tip-in detonation with heavy throttle input, then the knock sensors would pull timing & it'd go away. I installed Autolite $1.95 Copper spark plugs of the exact same heat range and the detonation is GONE. No other changes were made.

Platinum & Irridium = NOT a performance plug. These should be reserved for the Daily Drivers that don't require high octane fuel.

Copper = BEST performance plug.

I will not tune a boosted motor with Platium or Irridium plugs. Only Copper.
The talk of heads is about Mustang engines; this is from a Mustang forum. I know some of it is opposite of what I am saying for the Neon, but hey, it's a Neon. It runs fine on copper, lol.
