Can you explain the "exploding air filter" in more detail? Is it like a backfire that reaches the air filter? I'd fix the O2 sensor as a start. The car needs it to run completely "fine."

I agree on fixing the O2 sensor and then see if that explosion happens again.

I think he knows where it is on the 2002 since they unhooked it, but I think he means his '98 didn't come with one? If it didn't come with one, then I'm sure it would be fine as the computer wouldn't need that information to run correctly.

If I am understanding correctly, you can't find a replacement O2 sensor in your country? You might just have to look around online and see who ships to your country. A backfire occurs when the A/F ratio isn't correct, which could be caused by not having the needed O2 sensor hooked up. The ECU uses the O2 sensor to determine what the A/F ratio is, and then make any adjustments necessary based on that information.

I've already mentioned what I think the problem is. Just because the part is next to impossible to find, or expensive to get, doesn't make it not the problem anymore.

It wouldn't hurt to change the plugs, amongst other things. Preventative maintenance should be done at all times, to prevent a problem, not after a problem has occurred.
