Default big engine problems

2003 dodge sx 2.0 R/T with 260 000km.. As i was driving was accelerating and as switching from 3rd to 4th gear the engine shut off.. tried to start it and wouldn't go so dropped the clutch.. rpms went up to 2000 but engine was just turning there wasn't any ignition.. stopped and tried to start.. the starter sounds as if its spinning without anything attached to it. codes im getting are p0344, p0340, p0016.. which all seem to point towards a camshaft/crankshaft issue.. there was no loud bangs or anything the car just shut down.. having a combination of the starter not attached to anything, there being no ignition and all those engine codes.. it must be a big component, any ideas help!

Sounds like your timing belt broke. When the engine turns over really fast it means that there is no compression happening in the cylinders.

Long story short.. you need a new engine most likely.

Did you ever change the timing belt and water pump?

If you do it yourself the timing belt will be under 100bucks and if you have it done at a shop or dealership it will cost you more. Mine broke on me and husband didnt have to do anything else but put the belt on and mess with it for awhile.

If the engine in the R/T is interference (not sure if it is), then he will be requiring a new engine.

Fixed.

If the timing belt breaks, you'll be spending around $1,000 to fix it from what I've seen. This is why the call it preventative maintenance; so you don't have a major problem later.

When the timing belt breaks on an interference engine, it will bend valves amongst other things 99.9% of the time. As for the price of the belt, that's way expensive, but another story.

Wait a minute if both the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor go out at the same time which mine did my engine did shut down like his that just happened in the past two weeks. Just check and see if your timing belt is still on and not broken and go to autozone and get the sensors. Like 21bucks for the cam and like 36 for the crankshaft. may not be the timing belt after all. The wiring was all shorted out also to the camshaft sensor so you might want to check your wiring. Just giving you ideas what happened to your r/t sounds like what happened to my sxt a few weeks ago. Still maybe the timing belt. If so I would have yours checked to see if it breaking hurt anything. Nothing got hurt when mine broke. Mine must be lucky.

I never said it was the timing belt; I was just asking if it was changed. The big thing though is the code P0016. The tensioners wear out, along with the belt and water pump, which is why all three are supposed to be changed every 100,000 miles. It could be the belt hasn't actually broken yet, but has jumped timing by several teeth. Usually one tooth wouldn't cause the car to not run, period. It is going to be a timing belt/tensioner problem, or a cam and/or crank sensor.
