Default Problem w/tranny

My friend's 04 stock neon seems to be having some sort of issue. Here's the situation. He drove his neon and parked it....then it couldn't go in reverse. Next, when he got home, he turned it off for about an hour and when he started it again, it wouldn't move at all! What would be the problem? I told him to check the wirings and the filter. He told me he already changed out the filter before. His ride has 170,000 plus miles so far. Oh yes, it is an automatic too. Would there be a sensor that might have gone out on it? If anyone knows pleased give us any info. Thank you.

any fluid leaks?... common problem with 03-05 auto Neons is the auto trans cooler going bad... it's located inside the bottom of the radiator and when it goes, it mixes trans fluid with the coolant...a deadly combo... had it happen and had to replace the radiator and rebuild the trans...you don't wanna know the cost on that!

but that is usually found out by the leaking of fluid... comes out of the auto trans overflow behind the engine
