Default Oil Change Question

Hi guys I just bought a 2004 dodge sx 2.0 and I was wondering if there is an online guide on how to change the oil in it? Is it easy enough for a beginner to do ? Thanks

I just typed this up, enjoy. It may seem complex looking at it and reading it, but I like to be thorough. On a scale of 1-10, this job is about a 2.

How To:
·Change the oil on a Dodge Neon

Parts Needed:
·4.5 quarts of motor oil
·1 new oil filter
·An oil catch pan that holds at least 4.5 quarts
·A funnel
·A ratchet and a 13mm socket
·Ramps or a jack and jack stands
·Paper Towels
·Possibly, an oil filter wrench/strap

Directions:
1.Drive the car for about 15 minutes to fully warm up the engine oil (the best method), or park it where you plan on changing the oil overnight.
2.Once home, if you are using ramps, drive the car on them, shut the engine off and fully engage the parking brake. If you are using a jack and jack stands: park the car, shut the engine off, fully engage the parking brake, jack the front of the car up and place jack stands underneath the car to support it. Remove the jack, or lower it just enough so the car is sitting on the actual jack stands.
NOTES/DISCLAIMERS: Make sure you engage the parking brake. Make sure the ramps are rated for the weight of the car. Make sure you use jack stands if jacking the car up. If at all possible, work on a level surface. Do not work on non-solid ground.
3.Open the hood of the car, prop it up, and remove the oil fill cap. Leave the hood open. The extra light and airflow will be nice.
4.Once the engine has been off for about 5-10 minutes, get underneath the car and locate the oil drain plug. If looking at the car from the front, it is located on the backside of the oil pan.
5.Place your oil catch pan underneath so it will catch the flow of oil. Use your ratchet and 13mm socket to loosen the drain plug. Once oil begins to seep out, the plug is almost all the way out. Fully remove the plug and let the oil drain out for about 5-10 minutes.
NOTES/DISCLAIMERS: The engine oil and drain plug will be very hot if you drove the car prior to changing the oil!
6.Once the oil has fully drained, use a paper towel and wipe off the area on the oil pan around where the drain plug goes, as well as the plug itself.
7.Reinstall the plug and “snug” it with your ratchet and socket.
8.Once the plug is reinstalled, locate the oil filter which should be just about right above the drain plug. You should be able to grab it tightly enough to remove it. If someone previously installed it too tightly, you may need a filter wrench/strap to remove it. More oil will come out with the removal of the oil filter. Place the old filter into the oil catch pan with the old oil. Use another paper towel to wipe the filter mounting base off and ensure the old filter gasket is not stuck to it. If the old gasket is left there, the new filter will not seal properly and will most likely leak oil.
NOTES/DISCLAIMERS: The engine oil and oil filter will be very hot is you drove the car prior to changing the oil!
9.Using some of the old oil out of the catch pan, wipe a liberal amount of it on the new oil filter gasket. Install the new oil filter by hand. Screw it on until it stops, then give it another ½ turn, by hand.
10.By now, you should have drained the engine oil, reinstalled the oil drain plug, removed the old oil filter and reinstalled the new one. You are done under the car.
11.Place your funnel into the oil fill hole, where the oil cap was, and pour the 4.5 quarts of new engine oil into the engine, slowly, through the funnel.
12.Once you have poured in the 4.5 quarts, reinstall the oil cap. Screw it in until it stops. No need to try and get it tighter. If you do, you run the chance of breaking it in half since it is plastic.
13.Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Make sure the oil light does not come on in the instrument cluster. If it does, and it stays on for about 30 seconds, shut the engine off. Something is wrong. If the light does not come on, let the engine continue to idle for a few minutes. During this time, you can remove the oil catch pan and any tools and such that are under the car and then drive it off of the ramps, if you used ramps.
14.After a few minutes have gone by, shut the engine off. Look underneath the car for any signs of leaks. If you find any, find the problem and fix it. If you jacked the car up, now you can remove the jack stands and lower the car back down.
15.Wait about 10 minutes, and if the car is on a level surface, remove the dipstick, wipe it off with a paper towel, reinsert it and then remove it again to check the level. With 4.5 quarts, it should be at the “MAX” line.
16.If your oil light didn’t come on (it really shouldn’t unless something major happened while changing your oil, somehow), you didn’t find any leaks and your oil level is in between the “MIN” and “MAX” line (it should be on the “MAX” line with 4.5 quarts), you are done!
17.Now, take your old oil and filter to a recycling center/store to dispose of it properly!

NOTES/DISCLAIMERS: I am not responsible for any injuries (including death, if you somehow manage to pull that off while changing your oil), any little owies or boo-boos anyone gets, or damage to any sort of property, from following my guide. Essentially, you are responsible for your own actions. Do not dump you old oil and/or filter out onto the ground or toss it into a garbage can. Recycle it! Why include the above? People are stupid and do dumb things.
