Default P1776 code help/advice needed

The other day my cel came on so I ran to the local auto parts store to pull the code. They gave me P1776 which is solenoid switch valve latched in left rear position.
I googled it and got a ton vague ideas of what could be wrong ranging from a clogged trans filter to replacing the valve body and solenoid pack to a complete trans overhaul.
Are there basic and cheap things to look over before I take the car into a shop. I hate taking my cars into shops because I just dont trust them and 99% of repairs my cars have ever needed, I was fully capable of taking care them. The unfortunate thing is the 1% that transmissions fall into. I just never messed with them.
OK, so back to the issue. In some of my research on this code, people have complained of improper shifting or other wierd things happening with it. My car runs and drives just fine....no slipping, jerking, hard shifting or any thing like that. To be honest, if the light hadn't come on I would have never known of the potential problem.

Anyone have any tips on things I should check out before taking it to the shop? Also, it may be a long shot but is there somewhere I could look to check if it's a recall issue?
BTW my neon is an 02 2.0 base model.
Thanks

If the transmission fluid and filter haven't gotten serviced when they should have, a fluid and filter change can fix all sorts of problems. If it is really bad, you could change them again after a few thousand miles.

yeah, I bought the car back in 2005 with 35k on the odometer. It now has 70K and I've never serviced the filter or oil. I just assumed that should be good for 100k.

Any other ideas befor I take it in?

So, are you going to change the fluid and filter?

Changing the fluid is usually going to be the cheapest and quickest way to see if you can get a problem to go away on these things. Since it did nothing...

These are the four possible causes I have:
  • Valve body - Solenoid valve stuck in LR position
  • Intermittent short to ground or open circuit in LR Pressure Switch Sense circuit (with code 24 only)
  • Solenoid/Pressure Switch (with code P0841(24)only)
  • PCM (with code P0841(24) only)
Since you don't have code 24 (P0841), that leaves one thing Dodge says could be a possible cause for the P1776 code: Valve body - Solenoid valve stuck in LR position
