Default Thinking about putting a PT engine in?

Hey everyone,

I have a 2005 Neon SXT and I just had a question about the possibility of putting a 2.4L PT w/turbo into it. From what I've read (I don't know all that much about cars, but I'm learning fast) the PT 2.4L engine is basically the same as the SRT-4 engine, and I'd prefer to look into the PT engines, because all of the SRT-4 engines I've found have been ran into the ground. So my questions are (a) how compatible is the engine-what added work besides the engine swap would be required (b) how much would an engine swap cost-I've found a PT engine with about 50k on it for about $700 (don't know if it works) but I have no idea how much the cost would be to take mine out and put that one back in. Thanks a bunch

if you dont know much about cars and your just learning, an engine swap may be a little overambitious. do you have all the tools required? or are you paying someone to do it?
at the end of the day when its all said and done its gonna cost you
1. time without ur wheels
2. parts
3. tools if doin urself
4. labour if payin someone else
5. headaches (Pollution testing)
6. would your insurance company over you if you smashed it with a different motor?
7. $700.00 New motor
8. speeding tikets with your sleeper srt-4
9. the actual end dollar amount will completley depend on how resourceful YOU are. so who really knows the cost?

holy crap I'm sounding just like my father

IMHO not worth it, save your money for gas, beers, chicks, and other fun stuff (heh he wouldn't say that LOL)

In addition to the engine, you'll need the computer, complete wiring harness, fuel system stuff most likely and so on. It won't be cheap or quick(er) if that's what your hoping for.

EDIT: should have refreshed before posting. lol Thats what i get for writing a reply and posting it an hour later.

Cost to swap that motor is relative to your area. It depends where you are located and how much competition there is in the area. There is no pinpoint answer to that question.

A couple of questions for you...

Is your neon AT or MT?
Is the PT motor AT or MT?

Off the top of my head there are a few problems with the PT motor... (if my memory serves me right)

1. Wiring harness may not match up with your neon interior harness. May have to source a SRT neon harness.
2. Intake manifold and intake piping must be sourced from a SRT neon. The PT will not work. I guess you could cut a hole in your hood, but otherwise it will not fit.

Default Thanks for the replies

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. The neon motor and PT motor are both AT, in response to your question. I've asked around a little bit, and it seems like I can get a GOOD engine swap job done for about $3k. (I have nowhere near enough mechanical skill to do it myself) From what I've read, the intake manifold is different, I wasn't aware of the wiring harness, although you may be right. The other thing is the computer. I bought my Neon for $4500 with about 20k miles on it (rebuild title) and I'm looking to have a faster car, and thought that dropping the PT engine would be a lot cheaper than selling the Neon and buying an SRT-4. Still looking into it, I'll post as I find more out. Thanks again
