Default Fuel Gauge acting funny

It hasn't happened for a while, but I guess I should try and get to the bottom of it before it becomes a major problem... There have been times, both when I've already been driving and when I just started my car, that my fuel gauge has been on E when I have had gas in it.. I guess the movement of the gas in the tank would then get it to register how much is actually in there but the 3 or 4 times that that happened(especially the one or two times it happened while i was driving) it concerned me.. I assumed that the part of the system that is attached to or in the fuel tank was sticking, but I don't understand how with over half a tank in it that it would get stuck on E at all... any ideas??? thanks

Something is probably wrong with the float and potentiometer, or you have an intermittent wiring problem.

ok thanks.. supposing I would want to replace the float or potentiometer, would the float require a new fuel pump or fuel tank? and how easy would it be to replace the potentiometer?

its all combined in one unit,
fuel pump sending unit will include:
Pump, float, potentionometer, as well as filter and pressure regulator

you dont even have to drop the tank like the old days, Hope your close to empty tho
