Default Neon reverse problems

I have a front wheel drive, 2000 dodge neon with a 5 speed manual tranny. For a few months I have had a difficult time getting the car into reverse. When I started having trouble getting it into 2nd and 4th gears, I thought I needed to try to fix the problem. I noticed that on the cables leading from the gear shift to the tranny, the bushing right on the tranny where worn out.I ordered some booger bushings and installed them and I thought that was going to be the problem.I still have the same problem. If I grab hold of the cable right at the tranny and give it a pull, it will go into reverse ,and feels solid.I tried to adjust the crossover cable, but it did not help. The tranny feels great in 1st,3rd, and 5th gears. What can it be? what should I check next? I don't want to go to a tranny shop unless it is a last resort. Thanks for any help you can give me...

You actually can get a free estimate at tranny shops . So you can go there instead of us guessing. Tranny shops can test drive and right away now what your problem is.
