Hi I have a 2000 neon The fuel pressure is fine when car is running but drops off when you turn the car off. Is it suppose to maintain pressure or is this normal. I have been wondering if that could be why the car cranks a long time before starting.

 

pressure should remain long after you shut the car off, this is not normal operation
Your Issue is:
fuel pressure regulator has gone for a poop

its located on the tank and includes new pump/and float and reg all in one, which is a shamecuz u have to replace things that are still good(ie pump/float) but I pretty sure its a whole unit design and you cant rebuild the reg

It's likely to set u back about 150 doing it urself (i suggest when the car has a near empty tank). This is also a great time to do a fuel filter(hint hint)
the only special tool you may need is a large spanner to remove the fuel sending unit locknut. a strap wrench works well on this too

 

It's supposed to hold a decent amount of pressure for a pretty long time.

That is why you can leave your car overnight and it will still start speedily.

 

i have a 2000 plymouth neon which i assume is the same as a dodge. i have the same problem haven't had the pressure checked though. The only other problem i have along with it is if i turn the key to crank position but don't start. Then, back off then go to start it. it will start easier but like it should.
