Default Timing belt change cost

I am coming up on the belt change soon. this is something I don't want to do myself.
I got a price for the belt-tenioner-water pump of $645.00. Parts and labor.
Is this a fair price?
Thanks

With someone doing it yeah it gets pretty pricey they like to get you in the labor costs you can do it yourself for less if you know how.

A complete timing belt kit can be had for about $85. Labor should be about 3 hours, so labor will be whatever the shop rate is per hour x3. I paid somewhere around $250 in labor. I also bought a new motor mount and acc. belt tensioner pulley since both of those can also only be replaced when that whole side of the engine comes out. May as well do it and save yourself the trouble and money later. Wouldn't hurt to have the cam and crank seals replaced either, I found out. I've got a small oil leak now from one of those :\

Ha, $400-700 is money to my ears! My TB/WP/Thermo job on the Audi A6 Bi-Turbo I sold back in December cost around $1800 (indie)-3000 (dealer)! The job itself was a PITA - the entire front end had to come off just to get to the WP & belt! I still have about 20k miles on the neon until Dodge says to change it - but I might push it a couple more thousand miles over since my belt is still in really good shape (just inspected it at 83k when I rebuilt the engine after it was salvaged. Currently at 87,9xx

I changed mine at 108K. Every car is different. Some belts break in the 70K mile range, and some make it well into the 100's.

Darth & krain, how did both of your belts look at that age? Were they absolutely in need of a changing (at 108k / 111k) or did they still have a lot of life to 'em? I'm just at 88,000 now

Sounds bad , but mines at 125,000 ... it doesn't look bad. I don't have the cash right now to do mine, but it still looks decent ..

700 is a fair price to answer your question. If you're paying less than that then you have to consider that you get what you pay for.
