Along the line of a incorrect fuel gauge. My needle jumps constantly then whatever the lowest reading is that's where it'll stay. A couple weeks ago I was sitting at a light and as I started to move the needle was sitting at just under a quarter then immediately dropped to under the red. I wasn't gradual, it was a solid needle drop. It has only done that the one time but like I stated before it fluctuates rather frequently and I wasn't sure if that's normal for neons.

mine doesn't do anything like that. you might have a bad sending unit. or loose wire.

An erratic gauge (any gauge; not just fuel) is not normal in any car.

-Yeah, it sounds like either a bad sending unit or at least a bad ground. Growing up, some of the cars my buddies and I used to have had what we called floating kegs. With one of those, the gas gauge would drop when you'd take off from a stop, or rise higher than it was when you'd hit the brakes. The gauge would move around with the gas sloshing around in the tank. But that definitely isn't your case...

Matt

Don't forget, If you consistently drive the fuel in the tank below the level of the top of the fuel pump, or run out of gas completely, you are risking burning up the pump. The fuel in the tank cools the pump. General rule is not below 1/4 tank.
