Default gas gauge going funky..

i had to fill up my car today and it was right at the beginning of the red line for "E" and it only took a little over 9 gallons to fill up. is this a common issue or do i need to replace my sending unit?

-I'd say kind of typical. Mine usually takes barely 10 gallons once the low fuel warning lights up.

idk if i should just keep a gas can in the trunk and drive it til it gets to the "E" and see if i can still drive after that or what. if it is being funky then i'm calculating my mileage wrong.

Why do you think this is a problem? It's a 12 gallon tank with a reserve being part of that 12.

how big is the reserve? the reason i was asking is because i've been trying to figure out my mpg's and that kinda screwed it up i think.

How is it screwing you up? Take the number of miles driven/gallons of fuel put in tank= mpg. It doesn't matter what the gauge says.

-Yep, always go by how much gas you actually put in the tank.

There is usually a 2 gallon reserve or so on most cars. If I just get to the end of E, I get just about 10 gallons in the tank.

oh ok. that makes sense why that doesn't show up on the gauge.
