I was wonering the same thing. People are telling me to by a tach adapter. But the other model neons come with it int he cluster so there has to be a signal wire sumwhere. The closest i got was hooking it up to the negitive wire comming out of the ignition but when i did that it only read half the rpms. Say my car was doing 4k rpms the tach only read 2k. So i to am looking for an answer. I have a 2002.

I have an SE with out a tach either. I also thought about doing what you want to do. But I just bought a farely new SXT tach off ebay for $45 shipped. Perfect condition. You could just do what I did. It will be way cheaper for sure. $14 for the SRT-4 gauge bezel, $70 for a tach, $? for the adapter?

ok this is what i have tried so far. i took the cluster out and there is a rectangle that the cluster plugs into in the dash, well i took the tach signal wire from the gauge and started pluging it in each hole. i found one slot that made the tach needle move but when i reved the car the needle stayed in the same spot. so i think there is 2 wires that make the tach work on a stock tach cluster, but which 2 wires? unless does anyone have wire diagram for the wire plug in back?

I am not sure of the wire on the 2nd gen, but I know on my 1st gen, I hooked the pick-up wire to the coil pack and got half a signal, when I hooked it to the wire from the PCM,I got a full signal and the tach worked fine.
