Default air intake silencer

alright someone told me to remove the air intake silencer and cut the bottom of my airbox off until i got an air intake. so two questions here. one is it really worth doing this. i dont see how its gonna give any more than a .0000001 hp gain. if it is worth it how do i do it? i know little about cars so i am not sure what the intake silencer looks like or how to remove it.

a problem i can see in doing this is that it would cause me to fail state inspection which is going to be due before i can get a cold air intake.

thanks for the help

i dont know about the silincer, never heard of that.... but if you take your air box out, you can use a dremel, or grinder to cut it. i cut a couple holes in mine... your not gonna feel any difference... but for that matter your not gonna feel a difference with cai either. but at wot it sounds 100 times better. it gets much louder underload... not much different at idle or normal rpms

Just take the whole airbox out and put a filter on. That way you can just put it back on for emmisions. You may need some intake tubing to do it, but it will be cheaper than a CAI. It will not give you the same sound or HP increase as a CAI, but it will sound better

Hokie:
If I were you I'd wouldn't mess with that stuff. Just wait till you get your CAI.

y2neones:
I don't know about you, but I could feel the power increase once I installed mine.

my bro has a cavalier and he did a quicky intake just to mess around. but yeh he took the box out and just put a filter on the rubber air line.... works just like a normal intake just cheaper... i prefer cai....

There is a resinator inside the wheel well. If you jack up the car and take off the left front you can get to it (pull back the splash guard). I did that on my 04 SXT before I got a CAI. You can also leave the lid off of your air box. It depends on the style of air filter. It sounds pretty good.

what kinda of filter would be ok? i am assuming the stock one isnt going to cut it. if i have to by a $50 k&n i might as well just wait till i get a CAI and not even mess with it.
