Just got the other half a 2k Neon ES. It looks like the previous owner put an open air filter on it and removed the airbox. Also the MAS/MAF is still connected, but for some reason I am getting HORRIBLE gas mileage. Roughly 200 miles to the tank!! The car runs and drives fine(no CEL, etc) but is just getting bad mileage. Any thoughts or ideas? I'll probably start with changing the spark plugs this week. Thanks!

Damn, 200 miles per tank... that's 15.38 miles per gallon. Something is really wrong there.

 

Yea. I changed out the air filter and spark plugs today. We'll see how that goes. I Found a nice little surprise, tho. 3 of the plugs had oil on the threads/electrode. Now I know that on 1st gens this usually means a bad gasket or tube, but does this apply to 2nd gens as well. By the way, the car does NOT smoke.
