Gotcha. Checked fuel today as well as replacing spark plugs. Fuel is looking great. Plan on testing spark as soon as I get someone to help.

Does it sound like it is a slow crank or does it sound like it is spinning faster? A jumped tooth on the timing will cause a weird sounding crank and low compression.

I found a video of a jumped tooth. (skipped to 7:40)

Honestly, it sounds like a timing belt issue. It won't start after it fails, and it will crack slowly, almost as if it doesn't have compression.

I was thinking the same thing. I've watched a few videos on how to change the timing belt, but not 100% sure if this is something I want to tackle by myself. Do you suggest I hire someone to do it?

I'm not sure how well you can see with these engines but usually a quick easy test is to take off the oil filler cap and have someone crank the engine while you see if the cam turns with the engine.

I know that on my neon, there is a "baffle plate" just below the oil filler, so I don't think you can see it move.

Update: Turns out that it wasn't the timing belt at all. The brand new alternator I installed froze up a few weeks after installing, which wouldn't let the crankshaft turn at all.

So basically I spent a ton of time and money chasing a ghost.

Oh well, live and learn, off to get a new alternator!
