Default wont start after used head and cam, no codes

year 2000, just replaced the head and cam with a used one from the junk yard, from the same year and trans, only difference was mine is a base model and the other was a highline, or sxt. reason for replacement was, my gf's dad did the head gasket and screwed up the gasket, blocking off the oil port, so next to no oil was going to the head, so in turn, ruined the head, cam and rockers..... i am very mechanically inclined, just not with neons, i am getting spark, fuel, compression, no codes, timing looks to be good, tried 2 different cam sensors, cleaned grounds. i have two different snap on scanners (old brick and solus) tried doing a relearn still wont fire, when your first crank it, it tries to start for about 2 seconds then just cranks and you can hear it fire a cylinder every couple of seconds. the weird thing is when i hook up the scanners it wont read data, and have to try a few different times to connect, but i also have a craftsman code reader/LD scanner and hooks up and reads data no problem, but wont show cam or crank sig. i am running out of ideas. one guy posted about the cam magnet? just not sure what else to do, ive thought about redoing the timing belt see what happens, all the research ive done, the head, rockers and cam are all the same? am i wrong? ive got 15 years of diesel and automotive expierence, just need a fresh opinion and knowledge from people who own these things. thanks for any help in advance, im sure ive left things out so ask away at any thought you have.....

If you can get your hands on known good camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, it would be a good way to see if those parts are the cause of the car not starting.
