Default Differences in intakes

What is the difference in the $30 intakes on Ebay and the $200 intakes on the dealer pages, when they look exactly the same?

i have a $30 custom intake..... i dont notice any difference in horse power which i really didnt expect anyways, but my car is much louder than when it was stock. i cant really compare to a $200 system, but in my opinion i think you are just paying for the stickers that come with them.

Why would that make it louder?

i think its because the stock air box muffles the sound some and the intake lets more air through. the expensive intakes might also include a MAF (mass air flow sensor). the cheap ebay ones are usually just pipes and filters.

I agree with drew00, If you take the top off the stock box you get the same sound as a cold air intake just without the added performance. But if you get one make sure it puts the filter outside the engine compartment.

Yes, that is the point of a cold air intake.

I have yet to see an intake that puts the filter outside the engine compartment. I don't even see any advertised that way, they all show them under the hood.

my filter is right in front of my driver's side tire. i believe that is the what lilracingneon meant by out of the engine compartment.
