Heater Core Overflow
I'm new to posting here, but always find tons of help when I am here. My husband was driving our 2005 Dodge Neon tonight when the temperature jumped into the red 4 blocks from house. He drove home and turned car off only to notice coolant coming quite quickly from what he determined was the heater core overflow. After car cooled down, he added some coolant and drove it around the block a couple times. He stated it drove fine. Temperature was fine and heater still worked. (Of course, it is 90 degrees and could have been heat from outside.) Air conditioner still worked as well. Any advice would be appreciated as I need to get to work and I'm unsure if I should drive it.
There's no such thing as a "heater core overflow." Perhaps he is talking about the engine coolant reservoir tank? The white jug looking thing on the firewall? If coolant isn't coming out of there back into the engine, there are really only two things that would cause that: a bad radiator cap or the line from the tank to the radiator cap housing is clogged.
We know what the coolant reservoir tank is and that isn't what is leaking. I DID apparently phrase that wrong when I typed it. It was coming out of the little hose coming out of the firewall and into the engine compartment next to the coolant resevoir which I have since been told is the drain for the AC evaporator. We need to replace the heater core I suppose or bypass it for the time being. Thank you for your time.
