Default Make up filter

Went to replace the make up filter and my local parts store doesn't have it. The one they ordered for me looks nothing like the one on my car. It simply looks like a small sponge. Can I safely just replace it with a piece of sponge?

I think he means the breather filter that's inside the air box. Looks like a small rectangle foam rubber filter.

If it's dirty, wash it with Dawn soap, dry and reinstall. If it's torn, they sell them at parts stores for about $3-$4. They just have to order the right one, but either way, yeah, it's just a small, square piece of foam.
