Replace 02' Neon instrument cluster
I am teaching my two teens to drive and I feel it is best to teach them on a manual.
The most idiotic thing I have noticed with newer cars is that the cars with manual transmissions do not typically have tachometers, while cars that shift themselves typically do. I very much want to install a tachometer in my 2002 neon, and understand that the most commonly recommended way to do this is to install a used instrument cluster that has a tach.
I understand that WCS is that you need to remove the bulb that illuminates an error with the vehicle alarm when my vehicle has no alarm and the newly installed instrument cluster will not correctly display the vehicle's correct mileage, which is important to me.
I also understand the milage is stored on the PCM. There is so much conflicting info on this matter, but people are advising to "Go the cheap rout and spend $25 - $35 on an instrument cluster that has a tach and then TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MATCHED TO THE PCM" for around $100 because it is so much cheaper and than to just spend $40 on an aftermarket tach and then maybe by a tach converter chip?
When I bought the 02 Neon, the gauges were all flipped and on the other side of the pins. I found the recalibration procedure where I set the mileage display to vehicle miles, turned off the ignition, depressed and held the trip OD reset button, turned the ignition on, and all the gauges reset to where they were supposed to be. If I did this, would it also reset the milage to match the PCM if I installed a used instrument cluster?
Your help and advice will be greatly appreciated!
Best regards,
Scott and my two teens.

No, the mileage has to be reprogrammed with a DRBIII+ tool. There's no conflicting info; that's how it gets done. Also, they can legally only increase the mileage, not decrease it, so if you want to fix the mileage, you need to get a cluster with lower mileage than what you have now.
