Technical info for wheels and tires
Good moring all. I am new to this forum as a registered member, but have visited many times. A lot of good info here. I spend most of my time on Jeep forums, since I'm an offroader too.
I have an '03 sxt that is stock at this point. I have the 7 spoke stock alloys on my car presently w/185's. I believe that I will put some 17x7 wheels and 40 or 50 series tires on it this summer. There are a lot of posts about this subject, but most are opinions or success stories without hard technical information. I would like to know what range of wheel offsets work and what tire widths can be used without rubbing on the suspension or body for front and rears. I also would like not to hang out too far. I haven't measured the offset on the stock rims, but I will and probably take the approach of adding 1/2" to the stock offset for the extra 1" of wheel width. This may be enough if the tires are not wider than 205's.
Can any of you provide some guidance on this issue? Also, any close ups of wheels installed on cars that show wheel clearance and fit in the wheel wells would help greatly appreaciated.
TIA

RE: Technical info for wheels and tires
For those of you have purchased wheel/tire upgrades, the offset information for the wheels should be available on the manufacturer's websites. Offset is also easy to measure. Just put a straight edge on the top of the inside bead and measure vertically down to the seating plane for the wheel hub, then subtact 1/2 the wheel width (according to the tire shops web site ) . If any of you can give me some wheel/tire specifics, I can do the research.
