I read on an automotive forum that my 04 neon has some kind of box in the drivers side fender that is very restrictive to airflow. I read that it can be removed without any problems to the engine and that it might actually increase hp by a small amount. Anyone hear of this?

 

Yes. You can remove all of the intake system up to the throttle body. You will need a cold air intake or a short ram intake for your car. You can get a short ram for about $30 all the way up to about $200 for a good cold air intake. The short ram will give you a nice sound and a little more power. The CAI will give you a better gain in HP.

 

I believe its talking about the resonator box that you have to take off when you install a cold air intake. Its right in the driver side corner of the front bumper, its practically a black box just laying there. I dont know of any hp gains because when i took it off was when i was installing my cold air intake, the box is basically where the air filter will be if you where to install a cold air intake on your car.

 

Yeah the air box. but you need a filter, thats why I said take the whole thing and use either a short ram or CAI.

 

So if I did take it off I would have to install a CAI or short ram intake? The post I read about it did not mention having to replace it with a CAI or ram intake.

 

You would not have to but unless you did the gains would be none to less than that. Their is nothing to hold the air horn up to make the bend smooth. Basically it would leave your filter in a box that could suck in warm air with no smooth transition to let air in. Probably a loss in power would result. Either replace completely or leave it alone would be the best.
