the cost/benefit of putting a turbo on a 2.0 isnt as great as just dropping an srt motor and tranny in. there are plenty of good 2.4s out there from cracked up srts.

edit: lots of parts might be available here:

A bolt-on turbo kit is only going to run $2500 or so with intercooler and make 215+ HP reliably. How is that not cost effective? You can't pick up all the parts you'd need (engine, turbo setup, PCM, instrument cluster, etc.) to swap in the SRT-4 setup into an '02 for that. The 2.0 is plenty capable of making double that with forged internals.

if you want real power, forget the wimpy SRT-4 setup and swap in a V-8 and then turbo charge it. Sure, it's a little more work, but... (being sarcastic here)... Seriously though, it's just an extra 400cc, and it's only going to make a difference once you try making more than 600 HP to the wheels. If all you want is to run 13's, a turbo kit will do fine.

Take a look at the turbo kits available on www.modernperformance.com . You can also put the SRT-4 turbo setup on your car (with a little work and Matt's adapter) and make the same power or more than a stock SRT-4 engine, it's been done - Kev's '03 SOHC up in Mass. to be specific.

Best of luck!

An SRT-4 swap is better b/c the engine is built to handle that amount of power and more. If u put a turbo on a regular Neon's engine, the stock internals can only go so far. The 2.0 also has smaller exhaust ports etc. so you'll be changing heads, having a port and polish done too it and more (if you're serious about power). You'll spend more money trying to upgrade it than anything. There are many reason's the srt-4 engine is better (DOHC etc.)
It's all preference and how far u want to go. U can get the 2.0's up in power too but it will take some work.
If u put a turbo on your car I would really recommend putting an upgraded PCM on the car to get rid of the factory drawbacks. If u get a turbo and an upgraded pcm without upgrading the internals, I'd stay away from the high rpms. The turbo kit on Modern performance with an intercooler will run u about 3,200+ not 2,500. Check the website out. Modern performance's turbo Kits are cheaper than Howell's.

Check this website out; it's a 2.0L Neon with a nice setup.[sm=drooldude.gif]

So your saying a 2.0L block can't be made to handle the "power"? Please... The link you posted was a SOHC... Kev's setup is putting down over 230 HP to the wheels on the stock bottom end. The stock SRT-4 rods "only go so far" as well, you know. A 1st gen or PT DOHC head is easy enough to swap on, if you feel the need for the extra cam (which is nice, I'll admit). Not that it's all that hard to put a SOHC over 300 HP, or is that not "serious power" yet?

Upgraded PCM? With an SRT-4 engine in an '02, you'll need the SRT-4 PCM from the donor car or a brand new one from the dealer. Different crank signal. Used PCM means no start unless the dealer flashes it (good luck) or you get the instrument cluster, ignition key, and ignition switch from the same car. New PCM's don't seem to have that problem.

I'm not saying an SRT-4 swap is out of the question. But the original poster needs to seriously think about how much power he wants to make, figure out a budget, and go to it. He may be lucky enough to find a complete SRT-4 (or at least the goodies from the front end) for under $3500, who knows? Quick check on ebay and a few other forums, and I couldn't get the entire engine (including manifolds and turbo), intercooler, piping, and PCM for that much, even neglecting shipping charges.

I'm just so tired of folks waving the SRT-4 flag like it's the bullet proof Superman big brother to the ultra wimpy 2.0L waste of iron wannabe DSM blah blah blah... Even the lowly SOHC is quite capable of turning good times without breaking the bank.

$3500 now for a Hahn? Yikes! I remember eyeing them back when the side-mount intercooled version was less than $2k! And when did gas hit $3/gallon?!? I've got to get out from under this rock... LOL

No i didn't say that; I said that it will probably cost u more to prepare it to handle that power vs buying an srt-4 engine. The srt rods go further. Yes a reg neons rods can handle a turbo but when u get higher in hp, you'll have to replace the internal parts. It really does depend how far u want to go.
Regular neons do have potential; that's why I posted that link.

Its all a matter of opinion...

I spent barely under $2000 to complete my set-up. I have full access to a machine shop and alot of experiance under my belt for these types of things.

My 2.0l SXT makes the same hp and a tad more torque than the all mighty 2.4l @ just 10psi. If you want a dummy proof set-up, i agree, go srt-4 swap. Dodge did a good thing with that motor and upgrades, there almost impossible to explode.
