Default ethanol in gas

i have noticed that some stations in the area have started selling gas that contains 10% ethanol. how does this effect gas milage? because if it hinders it, i will do what i can to avoid them.

The gas/ethanol blend fuel is meant for specially built engines, as a movement towards alternative fuel sources. Simply put, unless you own one of the few, brand-new cars meant to run this fuel, DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR CAR.

I think you have this ethanol additive confused with the E85 that would be put in the 'Flex Fuel" cars...for a while now many gas companies have been using ethanol as an additive in the gasoline to make it "cheaper" to produce since it would be using less oil to make the final product. I dont know how widespread this blended gas is used, but this blended gasoline may reduce the gas mileage of your car by a little bit, since E85 makes engines somewhat less efficient, so i woud try and avoid it...

Iv always wondered about that.

The E85 is supposed to be 'the' great alternative, but its 'somewhat' less efficient than straight gas.

I just have this feeling that the whole E85 is just a great way to keep all the money, profits and tax in the US since (it comes from corn right?) it can be produced entierly in the US.
That said, it should be a hell of a lot cheaper to make and buy than gasoline.... lets see how much per gallon it finnaly gets tagged at.

Ethanol generally does come from corn. It can come from sugarcane also. Bio-Ethanol, can even be made from grass!

Well to be honest all the gas stations in my area use Ethanol and I did notice an improvement in my 2001 Neon but then i became retarted and put the gas booster in my car and then i lost the better gas millage.

So in my opinion don't be worried about it. It helps to keep the price of gas down a little bit.

E85 has a lower energy output than gasoline though right?.
Almost 20% less?.

(im too lazy to wiky it for now)

Presumably the octane rating at the pump is adjusted properly to account for the E85 being present in the fuel. Plus it should be marked on the Pump itself as part of the formula for the gas your pumping.

I cant say that for sure, I ever get gas from Circle K, Sevel Eleven, WalMart or places like that, so Im not sure if all gas stations have the same information at the pump.

E85 is for flex fuel cars but E10 wich is 10% ethanol and 90% gas has been around the midwest for many years.. early 80s I think. It has had a big effect on the farm economy here in Iowa It reduces emissions heres some info on it----------> ethanol
