in my state of ny, you HAVE to have a cat, no getting around it, plus if you hollow out the cat your downsteam O2 sensor will trip and it will not pass emisions, but that is just in ny, the cat has to phisicaly be there but you could hollow it out if you can get the check engine light off

The down stream O2 sensor looks for oxygen and will lean or richen if need be!! So what do think you are getting out of not having the cat there working the way the car is engineered too?! If the car runs to rich or lean then there goes any kind of performance from the car!

ok not having a cat is illegal anywhere in the us unless it is a purely race vehicle. if you take out, hollow, or get a high flow cat it will sound like crap so just gete nice muffler and your set. the downstream o2 sensor has no effect on how te engine will run. it only checks to see if the cat is working properly which means that it is looking for a change which is anything. a spark plug nonfouler trick will work. i had it on my car when i didnt have a cat but now i have it back on and its fine. no codes ever

idk, wen i took my cat off and got a longtube header my engine light came on and wen i hooked it to a computer it was actually leaning out my fuel a little bit. To fix it i got a trick sensor for like $30 and it made my light go off and my car went back to normal. I havent had any problems with it yet. AllthoughI am looking for a nice muffler that would make my car sound deeper since i took off the cat, does anyone know of one that will make it sound deeper or something?

accually the o2 sencer can cause your car to skip or even die out, when mine went bad that is exactly what it will do when they go bad, they will try to adjust the a/f mixture and if the sencor is bad it can not do that and can cause the car to hesitate, and sometimes die!

Why the heck is everyone taking off or hollowing out their cats? Why not go to a high flow cat and a performance exhaust? Do you know that relocating the cat is illegal any work done that is not OEM is illegal for the street! How are you guys getting through your inspections?

I have seen friends with stock vehicles that live there get fined for "loud exhaust systems" like Subaru's and stock old VW bugs that have minor muffler problems.
[sarcasm]what a great LAW!![/sarcasm]
anyways. I am in agreement with JTM in the fact that if people want a different sound... why not just make the cat a high-flow and get a performance exhaust?? Sounds better and is completely legal. Sure it is not the cheapest way to go but it is much better in the long run.
