Today i noticed a noise coming from the engine bay and the car was shifting all f***ed up. So i pop the hood and rev the engin up and thier is a kind of squeaking/grinding noise coming from the tranny. It sounds like plastic gears that are stripped! Does not sound like metal grinding. It makes the noise when i am driving and when in park??? Sounds like it is coming from the torque converter! any one had this prob.


BTW i have a 03 se, atx with 100,000 miles.

 

Ok it could be a few things so you'll have to answer a few questions for me...first, when was the last time you fliushed the transmission and replaced with new ATF+4? Second, can you descrive how the car is shifting a little better...is it jerking, mising shifts, etc? Third, have you noticed any other problems before today with your transmisison, such as poor shifting and things of that nature...

Your problem could be as simple as you needing a transmission flush to something as serious as needing a new transmission because of worn gears...since its making the noise while in park though, it almost sounds like your speedometer gear is worn...but it could also be something like your tranny linkage or some other component like it...

 

it feels like it cant get into gear and then when it does go in it feels like a slipping clutch. The tranny fluid was changed about 10,000 miles ago and is still nice and red but does smell a little burned.

ok, so i drove it across town to pick up my other car from storage. Now At low rpms it does the same thing but takes forever to go into gear...... Once it gets to abot 3,000RPM it lags getting into gear and the slams in gear hard enough to get a good squall out of 2nd and a chirp from 3rd..... 03neonRT were is thias speedometer gear???

Sorry man havent had time to check the forums the past couple days...the speedometer gear is driven off the output shaft on manual transmissions and i'm assuming it would be the same on any modern automatic. Since you said it felt like a "slipping cutch" im thinking its not the speedo gear because that would just cause noise not really make your shifts worse...I would say its either a worn clutch in your clutch pack or your converter clutch on your torque converter is not engaging properly.

I would really take it to the dealership or a certified transmission shop so you can get a definite answer on whats wrong instead of just a hypothesis from me.

 

yeah it is going monday, i just trying to get some ideas to make sure im not getting ripped off. I also have a spare tranny, the only thing wrong with it is were the tranny mount is it is cracked. It came off a totalled neon. Can the trans cases be welded????
