Welding Question????

Default Welding Question????

Can A transmission case be welded?? It is aluminum. Right were the trans mount bolts to the case it cracked directly through two of the bolt threds... I will post some pics tomarrow. THANKS in advance!!!

Yes, the aluminum can be welded. Can the average do it yourself welder do it? I would say no. JIM.

you cant use a regular welder to do it....and it is alot more difficult then regular welding...
it can be welded, but not by someone that doesnt know what they are doin

i can weld all day long.....but i wont do aluminum

Yes it can, but it will be hard and bloody expensive.... I dont know what you welder rates are down there. But up here right now its $110 to $130 an hour. Itll have to be TIG'd. You have to remove everything from the tranny case (depending where its cracked) Heat the crack to expose the entire crack to the surface, drill the end of the crack with a 1/8 drill bit (to prevent the crack from spreading while welding) grind the crack out to the point where you know you amperage will give 100 percent penetration on the weld and then fill the crack, grind it flat, redrill and tap your holes.

So in other words, buy a new tranny or housing.

sounds like a good excuse to swap in an r/t tranny. i wouldnt suggest the acr 5th gear is a little to short for the highway.

well had it welded today... looks great!!! i put the mount back on and lifted the hole tranny on just the mount with a cherry picker and it did fine!! here are some before and after pics!!!

and two pics of the motor for 200 bucks!! only has 15,000 miles on it. The sxt i got it from was t-boned by a moving truck!!! Dam* was that car demolished... mostly from halfway back on the front doors, all the way back you could not even tell it was a neon!! The front end was pretty tristed but it still started!!!
