2004 neon sxt?
My deck stock was just cassette and that had absolutly nothing. I think it has at least one if it has a cd changer but don't know if there are any more. If anything go to best buy and buy a Alpine deck for about 200 to 250. That's what I own and I run two tens two 1200 watt amp which is one the the best steros in Tucson.
I actually bought a low level line converter. as for the alpine, those are great but i have an eclipse cd player i just didn't want to mess around with putting it in because i am lazy.

I wouldn't say most decks are good, I have owned a lot of different decks and a lot of them are far superior to most. Eclipse in my opinion is the best, followed by Kenwood Excelon, High end Alpine, Pioneer Premier, higher end blaupunkt, and those would be the only brands I would probably buy. Some brands that I find to be crap are sony, jensen, aiwa, jvc(got screwed over on a warranty, so mostly i just hold a grudge against them). I figure there are two things that you need not be cheap on in a system if you want quality, first never skimp on an amplifier because you get what you pay for, and secondly buy a decent mid to high end deck. But this is just my opinion, take it for what its worth.
If ya want my 2 cents, I have went through a lot of head units, and here is how I would rate best ones based on sound quality, amplifier RMS, pre-out voltages, options, and overall performance:
1. Eclipse (8-volt pre-outs, woo-hoo!)
2. Clarion (high-end aka Mobile ES, the power on these has always been underrated, literally)
3. Panasonic (since late 2004, they've really shoveda lot ofpower and quality into these at a good price)
4. Pioneer (most models above $249 made after 2003)
5. Alpine (higher-end units above $299)
Of course, if JL Audio made a head unit, it'd be #1 on my list by far, but they don't so anyway... stay away from Sony, most of their car audio stuff is mediocre at best. For a cheap cheap unit, Aiwa actually has a decent amplifier built into the ones made after 2002... I was surprised how loud and crisp they actually get, but the lack of options and way-too-low voltage pre-outs bring them down. Same story with Pioneer's cheaper units too, they can get really loud and crisp, but lack a lot of other features. Higher-end JVC units are actually pretty decent out of the box, but I have heard rumors of compenent malfunctions with these, from CD ejection malfunctions, to skipping, and mid-level pre-out voltages. Oh and if it says Dual, Rampage, or almost anything else that's sold at Walmart, don't even attempt to put it in your Neon.
Or if you really really want to keep your stock head unit but have great sound and great expandibility with pre-outs, then here is a very high quality product to consider:

Not sure on $ for it. All I know is it looks like a good idea to me, and since JL audio makes it I trust it already. I've probably bought 12 sets of JL Audio subs, and I've used their monoblock amps, and bought their midrange speakers as well, and I've never seen or heard anything better, crisper, or louder from any other company hands-down, so for me I'd be willing to spend a few extra buckson something that as long as they made it and not a different company.
